Clonazepam (Klonopin)

Clonazepam, commonly known by the brand name Klonopin, is a prescription benzodiazepine used to treat panic disorders and certain seizure disorders. It works by enhancing the neurotransmitter GABA to calm the central nervous system. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, and fatigue. It is intended for short-term use due to risks of dependency, addiction, and severe withdrawal symptoms.

• Uses: FDA-approved for panic disorder and seizure disorders (including Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, akinetic, and myoclonic seizures). It is sometimes used off-label for restless legs syndrome, mania, and REM sleep behavior disorder.
• How it Works: Clonazepam acts as a central nervous system depressant by enhancing the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain.
• Side Effects: The most common side effects are drowsiness, sedation, dizziness, and problems with coordination or alertness. Other potential side effects include depression, fatigue, and memory impairment.
• Risks & Warnings:
  • Dependency/Addiction: It can cause physical and emotional dependence, even when taken as prescribed.
  • Withdrawal: Abrupt cessation can lead to severe withdrawal symptoms, including seizures, tremors, insomnia, and hallucinations. It should be tapered off under medical supervision.
  • Overdose: Combining with alcohol or other CNS depressants (like opioids) can cause severe respiratory depression, coma, or death.
